TIP:

Are you confused? Do you have a problem identifying what's going wrong?

Firstly check in the mirror. Look at your bow position.  Look at your left hand and wrist.

Still not sure? - Send me a video and I can give you the necessary feedback as to what's going wrong and what to do to correct it.

Key Points: Pieces 44 & 45

  • Piece 44 is a great little piece and will remind of snow scenes, sleigh bells and Christmas trees. It's tricky and needs each section checked out and practised. The bars to focus on are bars 3 ( open A to the 3rd on D, and the 3rd finger to a 3rd finger) and 6 (coming off the A to a 3rd finger and the 3rd, 1st, 3rd at the end)

  • Piece 45 has a fair number of slurs. Be careful because each of the notes is on a different string.

  • In Piece 44 watch out for differences between crotchets and quavers. Don't confuse the two. Practise a little slowly at first.

Remember:

  • As always start by doing a bowhold check, do a whole bow warm up, playing the scale of D major and G major. This is so easy to do and really helps you check your tuning.

  • To get going pluck through each piece once or twice.

  • Then try with the bow the Student's Track until you feel confident to move on to the duets.

  • Go from plucking to bowing and back to plucking until you are confidently bowing each piece.

  • Don't be in any rush to 'get it right straight away' - being patient will pay off in the long run.

  • Go over previous videos if you think something's not right.

  • Most 'horrible' sounds occur because of a tense right hand causing the bow to 'tremble,' 'bounce' or be 'scratchy'.
